My Journey of Mindful Diving
Allow me to share my journey. It will offer insight into the transformative power of mindful diving.
During my first dive vacation, my instructor's ability to consume significantly less air than I did surprised me. When I inquired, he replied, "It comes with experience."
I was certain that I could enhance my air consumption by breathing practice. I played the trombone as a child and engaged in Qigong meditation and -breathwork since the age of 18. hence I had a fundus of different breathing exercises. Based on that I developed a set of specialized exercises to practice scuba breathing.
The following dives were a revelation in every aspect. Improved air consumption, better buoyancy control, and enhanced trim were noticeable. Marine life permitted me to approach closer, as I created less noise with my bubbles. The act of diving had a calming effect on me like no other experience.
Two years later, I made the profound decision to change my profession. I abandoned my managerial career to become a dive instructor. After two years of working as an Open Water instructor, I decided to take the next step and become a full cave diver. This is necessary to guide guests through our incredible Cenotes.

Cave training transformed me, both as a diver and as an individual. To mitigate risk, meticulous dive planning became essential. We have to prepare for every possible problem, recognize our limits, and know our air consumption. It demands mindfulness.

During long cave dives lasting 140 to 300 minutes, we cover considerable distances. Finding a rhythm of breathing and kicking is crucial to conserve energy and air. Achieving a state of flow is paramount.
Around ten minutes into a dive, I start to find this rhythm. My mind gradually empties. I no longer need to count my kicks; I´m just aware of the right speed and intensity. I sense the sound of my bubbles as I exhale, how they pass my face, and the echo reverberating from the cave walls.

In this state, my air consumption drops to approximately half of the basic consumption when not mentally focused. Whenever possible I try to get into this state during my dives, even if it´s just for a short moment. The effect on my life above the surface was profound. A deeper, more restful sleep, a heightened sense of calm and relaxation, and a greater contentment with life.
